The Japanese Language Education Roundtable

日本語教育定期懇談会

Why Learn Japanese?

In the Washington metropolitan area, representatives from the Japanese language education (K-12 schools and universities), Japan Embassy, Japan Commerce Association of Washington DC, the Japan-America Society of Washington DC hold a meeting periodically to discuss issues surrounding Japanese education. MAATJ engages in the discussions and the projects that were created to improve Japanese education in the area and beyond. Thanks to the Japan Foundation grants and the support from the MAATJ affiliates, MAATJ led advocacy projects in 2020-2022 creating two task forces: Japanese Educator Task Force and Business Task Force.

Japanese Educator Task Force created videos describing how to become Japanese teachers in public K-12 schools in the DMV area. The task force also created the brochure guide and the handbook based on the requirements to obtain a teaching license in MD and VA separately.

Business Task Force conducted two surveys: One is for working professionals who have learned the Japanese language and culture, and it investigates the impact that learning Japanese language and culture has on professional development. The other survey is for Japanese companies in the DMV areas, and it investigates the business needs for learners of Japanese.
